Residents of the Big Apple will learn who will be their next mayor this Tuesday, in a race that will decide who governs and protects the nation's most populous metropolis at a time when the former president has vowed to send armed forces to the urban center.

Against that backdrop, New York has experienced a mayoral election that has matched two very different Democratic figures against each other. The contest has become an acrimonious showdown, laced with accusations of racism and Islamophobia, but it is the political differences between the two leading candidates that could have significant consequences for how the Democratic party performs in next year's midterm elections.

The Progressive Challenger

In the progressive corner is Zohran Mamdani, the young democratic socialist whose rapid ascent and people-powered movement has attracted international attention. On the establishment side is Andrew Cuomo, the former Democratic New York governor now running as an independent – and enjoying the support of ultra-rich donors and corporations.

With days to go, it is Mamdani, the one-time underdog who defeated Cuomo in the party primary who is firmly installed as the frontrunner. Mamdani, who has run on a agenda of affordability and promised to freeze rent for about two million city residents, has outpaced Cuomo by significant margins in every poll conducted in the fall, and it is very much the younger man's race to lose.

The Controversial Campaign

Yet, Cuomo, who resigned as the state's leader in 2021 amid accusations of sexual harassment, has stated clearly he will battle to the finish, and not necessarily in an fair fashion. He has trashed Mamdani's goals as unrealistic, and in the final stretch laughed as a radio host made Islamophobic remarks about Mamdani, who is Muslim. Recently, the independent was widely condemned as racist after posting an AI-generated ad that featured a series of racist stereotypes and showed his opponent releasing a convicts.

Broader Consequences

If the progressive secures a clear victory, the party establishment who have declined to support his bid will be compelled to address a message that has resonated with Americans' frustration at inequality, inflation and the establishment. It would be hard for the Senate leader and Hakeem Jeffries not to adopt at least a portion of Mamdani's progressive proposals about affordability, given the fresh face has created an excitement within the party arguably not witnessed since Bernie Sanders ran for president in 2016.

However, if the former governor, who had been predicted to sail to victory in the June primary, achieve a remarkable riches-to-rags-to-riches win, it could reinforce the party's existing approach of considered, lackluster opposition – a tactic that has infuriated the party base. A NYC rejection of the progressive's optimistic platform could persuade party leaders that the best plan is to remain in the center – even as polls show the present version of the party is deeply unpopular across the country.

Campaign Energy

Voters in the city seem to prefer the Mamdani vision. Surveys show that Mamdani supporters are much more excited about their choice than his opponent's supporters, something that has been apparent throughout the campaign. Mamdani's engaging content on digital platforms, his hopeful outlook for New York and his willingness to actually venture out and connect with voters in the city has attracted an force of more than 50,000 volunteers, many of them youth or first-time voters.

Yet, Cuomo, in his late sixties, isn't giving up. And with the stakes stacked against him, the ex-leader has resorted to ugly messaging in the final days.

Political Histories

As far as the Cuomo camp, and his wealthy backers, are concerned, it should never have come to this. When the assemblyman, one of 150 state legislators, started his mayoral bid in last year, not many had known him, and in truth, barely anyone even paid attention.

Cuomo, by contrast, eased his way into the race in March 2025 and became the instant favorite. He was the big beast who apparently held every edge. The quintessential establishment figure, he had wed a Kennedy and served in Bill Clinton’s administration. He assumed office as New York governor in over a decade ago, 17 years after his parent, the former governor, stepped down from the same position.

Mamdani, who was voted in to the state legislature in 2020, does not have the comparable background. But his commitment to providing no-cost transit and affordable child services – along with the freeze-the-rent pledge – present a more positive vision of the future than Cuomo’s pessimistic predictions about “mayhem” and rising criminal activity, and his promise to hire more police officers.

Campaign Controversies

Nevertheless, the candidate has encountered some challenges in the final phase, after video emerged suggesting him implying the New York police department and the Israel Defense Forces were intertwined.

“We have to make clear that when the boot of the NYPD is on your neck, it’s been influenced by the IDF,” Mamdani said in the clip, recorded at a DSA convention in recent years. Mamdani, a longtime critic of Israel who has said the country is committing genocide in the Palestinian territory, indicated he was criticizing joint training exercises between the NYPD and Israeli forces.

Emotional Response

As the race closes, the candidate seems to have gained sympathy and support, however, for his response to his opponent's escalating attacks.

Mamdani responded to the independent's 9/11 remarks in an heartfelt recording. In it, the candidate recalled how, when he first ran for state assembly, a Muslim uncle suggested to him that he did not have to tell people about his religion. It was a lesson, Mamdani said, that many Muslim New Yorkers had been told “again and again”: “That safety could only be found in the margins of our community. That it is in those shadows alone where followers of Islam could express their true selves, and that if we were to emerge from those seclusion, then it is in those silence that we must set aside our beliefs.”
