The megacity Awakens to Dangerous Pollution After Diwali
Tuesday brought citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered breathing dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" range.
Extremely High Pollution Measurements
Various sections of Delhi recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the safe threshold set by the World Health Organization.
Particular areas, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1,800, representing 15 to 20 times exceeding healthy standards.
Fireworks Prohibition and New Developments
For the past four years, the government had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during Diwali due to their major role to the hazardous smog that engulfs the city as the cold season begins.
However earlier this year, the current regional administration approached the supreme court to propose a modification of the prohibition.
The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only about 30% less polluting – as a balance between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".
Judicial Ruling and Reality
To the disappointment of environmental and health campaigners, the court agreed to the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.
On Monday night, there was widespread disregard of the designated hours across the capital, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly type.
Several monitoring devices throughout the capital recorded contamination peaking around midnight to extremely hazardous measurements observed during celebrations in at least three years.
Cross-Border Implications
The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also triggered a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region partly blaming deteriorating pollution levels in Lahore on pollutants originating in India following the festivities.
Persistent Pollution Problem
Alarmingly severe concentrations of pollution in the city have remained as a major challenge for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.
Around celebratory seasons, the amount of dangerous particles in the air has been observed to spike to 70% higher the most severe readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.
Multiple Contamination Contributors
The problem in Delhi is caused by a convergence of different contributors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, construction activities, garbage fires and smoke from agricultural fires in neighbouring areas of farming communities.
Within these states, farmers illegally ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, producing dangerous smog that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.
Public Health and Economic Toll
The economic and health consequences on the approximately 33 million residents calling home the capital region is substantial, according to multiple research.
These hazardous conditions leads to increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
The pollution is estimated to be responsible for 10,000 early mortalities each year in the capital.
